From the deep flatness of Inky Fingers, a colour founded by Morris as he tested the traditional indigo-discharge printing method at Merton Abbey, to Kelmscott Water, a delicate green-blue taken from the background colour of the Lily design (c.1873), every shade has a richly layered story to tell.
