A note from Elenore about this quilt: I had been quilting for several years when I decided to make an ABC Quilt. The problem I had was that 26 doesn’t work for a standard rows and columns quilt. When I looked at what other people had done with this issue they had added extra squares, usually 5 x 6 = 30 squares. I didn’t like that solution. I saw a painting with squares on it, but they weren’t all the same size. This inspired me to attempt to draw a series of blocks that fit together but weren’t all the same size. I broke it down, drawing it up square inch by square inch in Electric Quilt (I wasn’t very proficient in Electric Quilt at the time). Add some sashing and repeat for the bottom half. This is how the ABC Quilt came into being.
I have made this quilt many times now and usually try to customize it for the child I am making it for. In recent years I have added the child’s name in the appropriate letter block. Have some fun with changing blocks to personalize the quilt.
