Put down the ruler. Take a deep breath. And let the fabric lead.

In Stitch Happens: Improv Quilting Unplugged, Corey Ralph—affectionately known as The Blue Barn Quilt Co. ruler guy—invites you to step outside traditional rules and discover the joy, freedom, and creativity of improv quilting.

This full-day, hands-on workshop introduces participants to the art and origins of improv quilting through live demonstrations, guided practice, and creative exploration. You’ll learn how to cut and construct without strict measurements, embrace “happy accidents,” and build confidence working intuitively with fabric and stitch.

Whether you’re brand new to improv quilting or already experimenting with a freer style, this class meets you where you are:

  • Beginners will gain clear, supportive instruction and confidence-building techniques.
  • More experienced improv quilters will be challenged to push further—adding complexity, refinement, and personal expression to their work.

Each technique is taught in layers: starting with accessible basics and then expanding into more advanced applications. No pressure. No perfection. Just creative momentum.

By the end of the day, you’ll have a collection of improv blocks that can become a table runner, wall hanging, or even the start of a full quilt—and more importantly, you’ll leave with a new way of seeing fabric, mistakes, and possibility.

Skill Level: Confident Beginner – rotary cutting & basic sewing skills required
